Holysloot Residence year: 2012

This Holysloot residence was a newbuild on a spacious plot in a small village near Amsterdam.

The client closely managed both the design and build process while aiming for an environmentally friendly build. The house needed to fit into the local style.

I was asked to assist with both structural and layout advice, secondary they commissioned a staircase design and sketches for the kitchen.

I designed a staircase with top quarter to work best logistically. However I wanted to allow for front to back transparency. Top quarters often have a structural support coming into the space. I simply cut the two top steps of and merged them in a massive wooden block the thickness of the floor layer. The remaining steps are cantilevered from the wall, as sleek tapering slabs. The final addition of glass sheets around the stairwell accomplished this minimal yet sensitive result.
